Mobile Phone Security

Finger vein security coming soon

Forget finger print and retinal biometric scans, technology companies are now working on finger vein security for mobile phone handsets and devices.

Said to be faster and more accurate than standard biometrics the new technology uses a sensor to capture light scattered through finger veins.

Finger veins are unique both to people and individual fingers and do not change with age.

This technology can be used for laptops and mobile phones but it could be around a year before it is fully available.

Mobile phone security for business users

According to a report from Quocirca, following a survey commissioned by mobile operator Orange, most companies recognise the importance of mobile security but many do not have any system in place.

Of over 2,000 UK IT professionals surveyed, most felt that mobile security policies were vital. However, a third of companies surveyed do not have policies that cover mobile, wireless or cellular devices.

For more expensive products, including wireless laptops and 'smart' devices, security measures increase, but one in five companies still do not have security policies in place for even these devices.

Of the companies that do have mobile security policies in place, over a third do not strictly enforce these policies. While most companies surveyed recognise that security is a shared responsibility between the employer and its employees, many fail to provide leadership in this area.

The vast majority of companies consider their employees the primary threat to mobile security. To combat this problem, Quocirca recommends that businesses use the communication devices themselves to effectively generate a higher level of security consciousness among employees.

Quocirca added that the proliferation of handheld devices may make businesses and employees alike less serious about their security. Since devices such as mobile phones are relatively inexpensive and easily replaceable, their loss or theft may not be taken very seriously.

To increase employees' security consciousness, Quocirca says, the value of these devices - such as their accessibility to corporate data - must be more strongly emphasised.
