Business Mobile Glossary
- Tariff - a schedule of prices or fees.
- SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card - Inserted inside all GSM phones the SIM card identifies the user account to the network, handles authentication and can provide data storage for basic user data such as contacts.
- Mobile Phone Handset - a telephone that is self-contained and able to be easily carried containing both mouthpiece and earpiece for receiving and transmitting.
- Mobile Internet - internet that is received via a mobile network, on a laptop or mobile phone handset, via the 3G network.
- USB Modem - a modem device for receiving mobile internet which plugs into a standard USB computer port.
- 3G - third generation protocols allowing greater amounts of data to be transmitted eg. mobile broadband.
- Bluetooth - a system of communication between both mobile and stationary devices.
- GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) - a radio technology for GSM networks that adds packet-switching protocols and shorter set-up time for ISP connections. Usually charged by amount of data sent rather than connect time.
- GPS - Global positioning system via satellite. A cluster of satellites provide position, velocity and time data to suitably equipped devices.
- Network operator/provider - Company with a license to provide wireless telephony services. eg. Vodafone
- Business Mobile Phone - A mobile phone handset that is used by a business or self-employed person and is registered in the business name with the network.
- Airtime - Time spent talking on the mobile handset.
- BER - Bit Error Rate
- FER - Frame Error Rate
